Okay, this is a win for authors who post on Twitter. I downloaded the sample after a tweet grabbed my attention. I'm so glad I did. I bought the book when I reached the end of the sample.Pendred Noyce is an amazing storyteller. Amazing! Officially this is a young adult (under Children's books on Amazon), but I was sucked in by the absolute grace with which Ms. Noyce told the story. For children I would expect them to be at least preteen before they would grasp the entire story. Also there are some dark/painful parts to this story that may not be for the much younger set. All of that aside, what a great story this was and excellent world building. The characters were real people that I followed along with on their adventures and setbacks. I was completely entranced, which is nice since it has got me out of my blogging slump.
The book description hardly does justice to the amount of adventure, tragedy, soul-searching, twists and complex situations Kiran, our 17-year-old hero, manages to get himself and his friends into. He truly experiences some awful things as a slave. His circumstances would be enough to thrust anyone into a bout of depression and some would just give up, but Kiran has a particularly stubborn streak. He is a very likable and clever character despite his shortcomings, which he spends the course of the book overcoming. He also seems to have pretty good taste in friends as they rarely let him down when he needs them most.
All in all this was a great journey and an engaging story. I enjoyed it very much. It took me far away from concerns about world politics and was good enough to have me looking forward to when I could read some more. I hope some of you will also have the opportunity to enjoy it. Happy reading.

I thought this was a wonderful book, full of family values, with a great underlying message about one's special place / self worth in the world. When a loved sibling dies, how do you fill that role in your life? The protagonist in this story tries to fill the role of a lost relative, in his family and community (taking place in a rural village, many centuries ago), and by doing so, he gets himself into a heap of trouble. In the end, he has to find his own way, realizing that he is better off being a musician than a warrior. Yet, through his adventure, he realizes that if he ever needed to, he could indeed be a great protector. But, his special place in the world, and where he has the greatest ability to help others, is through being an amazing master flutist. This story has plenty of exciting moments of battle, some romance. and its music-based theme is sure to be of interest to those of us who feel empowered in the world through our music.
I bought this for my granddaughter who loves playing the flute. I decided to read it first and was captivated with the story from the first page. This is an incredible tale for not only fantasy buffs, but for anyone who has a passion, like the main character has, about music and playing the flute. The story is very well written, with words and descriptions stimulating the senses as any great book should do.
I read this book after becoming a fan of the Tumblehome Press, its creative books, and its mission. The Beechwood Flute is my favorite of the bunch. I was immediately capitavated by the Kingdom that Dr Noyce created to include people of different colors, classes, abilities, and opportunities. Like all good fantasy novels, there is so much about the characters and their families that is familiar, but with a twist that allows for imaginative recasting of some real and serious cultural problems. I loved the character developement and growth, including the challenges to Kiran's conscience to do the right thing,and correct the errors in judgement he makes along the way. The family conflict, friendship, loyalty and fairness themes are critical to this coming of age novel, yet spun with adventure that makes the book a page turner. The writing is lovely, and carries you through to the satisfying end. This a a great book with a great message for older children, their sibs and parents.

Written by Pendred Noyce, the setting is rich, the characters realistic and engaging, and the challenges the protagonist, Kiran, faces are all too real. The reader gets caught up immediately in Kiran's struggle to understand and become what he really wants in this fantasy village on the frontier where his options are limited and his past haunts him. Events conspire against him and very soon he tumbles into a situation for which he is completely unprepared. But that situation begins to reveal clues about his past, and about the future he could choose--or not.
The Beechwood Flute vividly shows a struggle that is much more than a simple coming-of-age story. There are brutal questions about what makes one human, what pain and suffering can do, what it means to be part of a group or be made an outcast, and the clash of cultures between conquering outsiders and an indigenous people. The book doesn't rely on fantasy genre tropes about magic, warriors, wizards, and dragons, but it doesn't need to. There is intense action and heroism in the actions of everyday people inhabiting a world perhaps one or two places removed from our own.
I highly recommend this book. Great writing, beautiful plot, fully engaging from first paragraph to the last sentence. Pick this one up!
